Details of the 2013 bike ride

Charity Cycle Challenge round the Isle of Wight, 18 May 2013

The cycle challenge took place on Saturday 18 May in almost perfect conditions – sunny (for most of the day), not too hot, no rain, and not much wind. And a very welcome break at Marcia's parents' house in Alverstone for tea and Battenberg.

The event raised in excess of 8000!

The picture shows the participants about to set off from UKSA on Saturday morning.

After the success of three sponsored cycle rides around the Isle of Wight, the Solent and North Norfolk, we invite you to join us on a cycle challenge around the Isle of Wight again on Saturday 18 May 2013.

The route

Small map of route round the Isle of Wight

We are planning on starting in Cowes and cycling around the island anticlockwise. The route is 100 km and is on a marked route, mainly on lesser used and back roads. Click here for a detailed map of the route. Click here to find out more about the route.

There is an easier option which is slightly shorter – you can return to Cowes from Alverstone along a flat track which follows the route of a former railway through Newport back to Cowes. See the detailed map for more details.

Accommodation

We have booked accommodation at UKSA in Cowes for the nights of Friday 17 and Saturday 18 May. Breakfast, a packed lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday will be provided. We ask that you give a donation to cover these costs – the suggested donation is £75. The suggestion donation for children is £50. Please click here for directions on how to get to UKSA. It is easy to get to Cowes from London after work on Friday and still have time for a drink (but not too many!)

If you wish to drive, we recommend leaving your car on the mainland in Southampton. There are long term car parks by the ferry terminal. Please click here for details of ferries.

Sponsorship

In order for us to ensure we raise money for the Trust we ask you to commit to raising a minimum of £75.00, although we hope that this challenge will capture the imaginations of your potential sponsors so that you can easily raise more!

To set up online sponsorship forms, please go to BT MyDonate or the Charities Trust – Shining Life is registered with both of these organisations. You can use the one you prefer.*

For BT MyDonate, click on the link above and then click on the 'Start Fundraising' button and then search for Shining Life. For both websites, you will need to set up an account if you do not already have one with them.

Finding out more

To register your interest and/or find out more, please e-mail events@shining_life.org (but take out the underscore - it's there to prevent us being inundated with spam!)

*Sorry, but we are no longer registered with JustGiving, because they charge us over £200 per year to be registered with them. In contrast, BT MyDonate and the Charities Trust do not charge us anything. We're sure you'll agree that £200 is a lot of money for a small charity like us.
